RY331: Intermediate Okinawan 1 (WIP, 3/25) Lessons
Overview
Subtitle: The difficulty of the level of this course and introduction
Number of words you should already know
Subtitle: Depends on some factors
In theory, you really need to know about 4,000 words before beginning this Intermediate Okinawan Course.
However, you may be able to understand some things, especially at the beginning stages as long as you know about 1,600 words or more in Okinawan.
CEFR / ILR approximation
Subtitle: Not exactly easy to estimate...
If I personally had to provide an estimate as to what CEFR this course would be, I would say the absolute lowest minimum would be:
- very high A1
- しまくとぅば検定7級合格 (Shimakutuba Exam 7-kyu pass, pre-2023)
- しまくとぅば検定合格まであと少し (Shimakutuba Exam almost passing, post-2022)
- ILR Level 1 (not 0/0+)
Though some sections are for review, ideally one should have around this level as an ideal:
- high A2
- しまくとぅば検定5級合格 (Shimakutuba 5-kyu pass, pre-2023)
- しまくとぅば検定B判定 (Shimakutuba Exam Grade: B, post-2022)
- ILR Level 1+
My goal is to get a user to the following by the end of Intermediate Okinawan 2 :
- high B1
- しまくとぅば検定A判定 (Shimakutuba Exam Grade: A) and beyond
- ILR Level 2 (maybe 2+)
Intermediate Okinawan 1 will go half-way to this goal.
Why I'm making the course and who I am
Subtitle: SMAUGRYU
This course is designed to go beyond the beginner stages of grammar and into the intermediate range. Please avoid skipping lessons. I have specifically designed this course so you can confidently get to my end goal level.
I grew up in the central part of Okinawa for many years of my childhood. Though to be fair, Central Okinawan refers to Central and Southern Okinawan or Okinawan for short. I was picked on during my early childhood because I couldn't pick up the Okinawan language quickly. I swore to someday go beyond the average Okinawan language native speaker in Okinawa. While sure, I am native as well, it's a little bit different that people learning with just one or two languages from their pre-school days. I had to learn three: Okinawan, English, and Japanese, although now I am learning even more languages out of pure curiosity and prevention of language barriers.
By the age of 16.5, I was able to confidently say that my Okinawan language skills were above the average native speaker. By the age of 17 (almost 18), I published my first research paper on the Japonic language family, more specifically on the vocabulary comparison between Okinawan and Japanese. Additionally, I am also the head contributor/creator of the Duostories Okinawan language course.
Which order are the courses?
