You might be thinking at this point. Wait... shouldn't this verb be used further back in the course and not at the intermediate level? However, this word is actually unique compared to any other language.
In most languages, verbs such as "want", "wish", "would like" is a VERB.
HOWEVER, in Okinawan, it is an ADJECTIVE.
欲さん can also be 欲しゃん (due to the s/sh merger, explanation in a different lesson).
In Lower Intermediate 2, we learned that to negate an informal adjective, we substitute the -san with a -koo neen.
Let's practice.
Translate the following from English to Okinawan. (Informal = 1/5 formal).
English:
- I want to learn Okinawan [i.e., the language].
- I do not want to go to the ocean/sea.
- I would like to drink coffee.
Okinawan:
- 沖縄語 習（なら）い欲（ぶ）さん。
